We have had a crazy year filled with stress and changes from our normal everyday routine, which has affected the way my family and I sleep. That’s why I have come up with a routine to help ensure I get a better night’s rest.  If you or your kids also struggle to fall asleep, there are some options that can help – whether it’s taking supplements or establishing good bedtime habits, here are some tips & suggestions that have helped me and my family:

Create a Sleep Routine – Setting a routine for when you go to bed and wake up will help you get a better night’s rest.  I’m a firm believer that our bodies crave a routine.  Setting a scheduled time for going to bed and waking up has helped me get a better night’s rest.  I have also switched my showers to the evening because the warm water helps calm me just before bed.

Avoid Bright Screens 60 Minutes Before Bedtime – Did you know that exposure to bright LED lights such as smartphones, laptops and TV screens before bed can interfere with your body’s natural release of melatonin? If you are looking for an alternative to the bright screens before bed, I recommend reading a book. I look forward to relaxing and reading a book before bedtime, as it helps me to unwind.

Consider Taking a Melatonin Supplement – Sometimes you need a little extra help falling asleep. Enter Natrol® Melatonin to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer so you wake up feeling rested.†   They even have a 3 a.m. Melatonin for those middle of the night wake ups when you can’t get to sleep.†*  I go through phases where I really struggle getting to sleep, and it’s comforting to know that I can take Natrol Melatonin to help me on those nights where I know I need a good night’s sleep.  I really like the fact that it’s 100% drug-free and non-habit forming, too.  The fact that they also have fast dissolve tablets is convenient so that I don’t have to get up to grab a drink of water in order to take them.

Create a Good Sleeping Environment – A noise-free and dark room can help you sleep better throughout the night. If necessary, you can mask noise with calming sounds or ear plugs. Block out disruptive light with darkening curtains or a sleep mask. I find that a cool room helps me sleep better than one that is too warm.  I just recently set a timer on our thermostat so that it heats the house more gradually in the morning.  At 5 am it was blasting too much heat, and it made it very uncomfortable for my last 1-2 hours of sleep.  This has made a big difference for me!

Exercise Daily – Exercising daily can help you sleep better too. Going for a brisk daily walk isn’t only good for your heart but will also keep you up less often at night. Exercising in the morning or afternoon is ideal, because exercising too close to bedtime can be stimulating. This is one area I have been focusing on, and I have noticed a difference in how I sleep on the days I get some exercise.
